A model for predicting the quantities of dissolved inorganic nitrogen released in effluents from a sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) recirculating water system ArchiMer
Pagand, Pascal; Blancheton, Jean-paul; Casellas, Claude.
Fish excretions and the transformation of nitrogen by bacteria in the nitrifying biofilter are two of the main sources of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) in fish farms that use recirculating water systems. In this study, the DIN concentration in an experimental Dicentrarchus labrax aquaculture system was calculated using empirical sub-models for fish growth, ingested food and water replacement. The specific growth rate (SGR) (% day(-1)) and the daily feeding rate (DFR) (% day(-1)) both depend on the average weight, W (g), of the fish: Y = aW(b), where Y may be SGR or DFR, and a and b are empirical constants. The DIN discharge rate, Gamma(N) (% of ingested nitrogen), in the experimental aquaculture system was expressed as a function of increasing...

The use of high rate algal ponds for the treatment of marine effluent from a recirculating fish rearing system ArchiMer
Pagand, Pascal; Blancheton, Jean-paul; Lemoalle, J; Casellas, C.
A high rate algal pond (HRAP) system was used to treat effluent from a recirculating sea water aquaculture system in southern France. Dicentrarchus labrax L. were farmed at a high density, with effluents containing an average of 10 mg L-1 dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and 1.3 mg L-1 reactive phosphorus (RP). On a yearly basis, the algal pond removed 59% of the dissolved nitrogen and 56% of the phosphorus input, which was converted into 3.3 kg DW m(-2) algae. Green macroalgae were dominant throughout the year and the algal biomass mirrored the seasonal changes in daily irradiance and temperature. This first year study supports the possibility of treating marine aquaculture wastes using HPAPs, although conditions will have to be found to mitigate the...

Traitement des effluents piscicoles marins par lagunage a haut rendement algal ArchiMer
Pagand, Pascal.
When facing the increasing development of aquaculture, farming in recycled water is an alternative to limit the impact on the environment: farming produces a lower amount of wastes but of higher concentration which can be treated. The goal of this thesis is to evaluate the efficiency of high rate algal lagooning/ponding (HRAP) for the treatment of marine fish culture effluents. Also, this study utilizes wastes from Dicentrarchus labrax grown in Ifremer's recycled waters station. The first step shows the particularities linked to recycled water farming effluents. They are characterized by low particle and organic substance concentrations as well as strong dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and phosphorus (DIP) concentrations. Furthermore, nitrogen is mainly...
